From the time we are little kids, we are told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, yet many Americans choose to forgo this morning meal and don’t start their eating for the day until lunch. If you are trying to lose weight, or even if you are just trying to be healthy, then don’t fall into the trap of missing your first meal!
Skipping breakfast happens for many reasons. Here are a couple of the most common ones.
– Many people feel rushed in the morning and simply don’t allocate any time for eating before they leave the house. Their body is then trained to accept that it won’t be fed until later in the day, and it begins to adapt to this schedule.
– Second, some people simply aren’t very hungry and don’t have an appetite in the morning. This can happen because when some people wake up, their stomach is still in “sleep mode” and their metabolism may be sluggish. Absence of hunger can also result from eating a meal very late at night.
– Third, sometimes, a choice is made to skip breakfast. This is usually a result of the thinking error, “If I don’t eat my breakfast, then I won’t add on any extra weight.” Sadly, the opposite is often true.
If you currently skip breakfast, and are trying to lose weight and stay healthy, there are reasons that you should consider changing your eating habits.
If you think about it, if you get a solid 8 hours of sleep, and then wake up and don’t eat for 4-6 additional hours, then at a minimum, you aren’t receiving any food or nutrients for 12 hours straight! And depending on when you ate your last meal before bed, you could be closer to 15-20 hours without food! When this becomes a habit, and your body knows that it will go for at least 12 hours sans food, then you start to hang on to the food that you do eat during the day in order to compensate for such a long break.
If you skip breakfast, throughout the day, you are more likely to “snack” on things to make up for the calories that you missed in the morning. You may overcompensate at lunch by eating a huge meal because you are so hungry by that point. Those who don’t eat breakfast, generally take in most of their calories after 5 pm, rather than distributing their calorie intake throughout the day. This imbalance leads to weight gain because your body stores more fat to use as fuel during the times when it is “fasting.”
People who eat breakfast within an hour of waking up are much less likely to be overweight! In fact, studies have concluded that you are 43% less likely to become obese if you eat breakfast daily. (Source) That is a pretty amazing concept.
